Montreal bass player, producer and musical director Alexandre Lapointe is the founder and leader of funk band The Brooks. He brings more than 25 years of stage and studio experience. His signature: melodic lines, deep groove and a vintage tone you can pick out from the first note.

As a producer, he helmed Pascale Picard’s Bigger Kids, Bigger Problems (Simone Records, 2025) and also served as her musical director on stage. He’s produced records for The Brooks, Hanorah, Bermuda and many more. He led Le Grand Minuit, the City of Montreal’s New Year’s Eve celebration on December 31, 2025. He also directed the opening concert of the Montreal International Jazz Festival’s 40th anniversary (2019) and a Prince tribute show (2016).

In the studio and on stage, he’s backed a long list of artists, including Martha Wainwright, Aliocha Schneider, Betty Bonifassi, Michel Cusson (UZEB), Yannick Rieu and Daniela Andrade. He’s worked with Joel Campbell, musical director for Tina Turner and Janet Jackson, and with Binky Griptite (Sharon Jones, Amy Winehouse, Antibalas). He’s also recorded music for Moment Factory and Ubisoft. With The Brooks, he’s taken Montreal cosmic funk far beyond Quebec, often to sold-out rooms around the world.

For Alex, it all started with Motown, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. He learned his craft from the records of James Jamerson, Pino Palladino, Bootsy Collins, Larry Graham and Paul McCartney, not to mention The Meters and The Funk Brothers.
